Behind the papered-up windows of the new steel-and-glass retail complex at Rose Avenue and Rennie is a Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams shop in the works, due to open this fall. 

A pioneer of the artisanal ice cream movement, Jeni Britton Bauer was churning out original flavors like salted caramel before salted caramel was a thing at her first scoop shop in Columbus, Ohio, back in 2002.

Jeni's has since expanded to 23 scoop shops, mostly throughout the Midwest, and Bauer earned a James Beard Award for her 2012 cookbook "Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams at Home." The famous pints are also stocked at national grocers and shopped online at jenis.com—which is what led to the move out west. Apparently, people in L.A. really like Jeni's and order it a lot, so Bauer opened the first West Coast scoop shop in Los Feliz last year. The Venice location will be its second.
