[Video] Venice Whaler Gets Fresh Look, New Menu and Never Mural
The Venice Whaler, established in 1944 and one of the most popular spots for cocktails and bar bites at the beach, recently debuted its updated decor, a new menu, and fresh artwork from local muralist Jonas Never, who used to work there according to his Instagram post (see below). Mike Dobson, behind Red O on Melrose and the soon-to-come Red O in Santa Monica, took over The Whaler in April wanting to keep the casual, beachside vibe but up the ante on food and drinks.
Decor is still classic nautical – deep blues and grays punctuated by brass fixtures, local artwork and photography. The biggest change you'll notice comes from the kitchen. Chef Nick Liberato created a menu of "upscale dive bar food" meant for sharing. There are all the familiar favorites including burgers, tacos and a spicy chili dog, but upgraded with fresh ingredients and mixed in with healthier options including asparagus with burrata, crispy brussels, roasted beets and kale salad. Look out for new craft beers on tap, and if you're into Moscow mules, the Whaler Mule delivers a sweet and spicy kick.
