Something Barreowed, Something New
A girl walks into a barre...
Specifically, The Dailey Method, a high-intensity workout combining ballet, yoga and serious core conditioning to help lengthen and strengthen your muscles into a gorgeous dancer's physique. Jill Dailey (as in, the Jill Dailey of The Dailey Method who created the first barre class on the west coast and now runs a burgeoning empire of studios in the U.S., Canada, and Europe) visited the Venice studio right next door to Intelligentsia Coffee on Abbot Kinney to introduce and teach an amped-up version of her Dailey Method workout, called The Dailey Interval.
During the many sets of cardio-boosting planks and plies, you can't help but admire the caramel cork floors right under your nose. As you elongate into a cobra, you gaze up at bright white rafters and vintage ceiling fans. You see an airplane pass across the sun-drenched skylights, and for a moment the calming aesthetic of this beach house studio distracts you from the fact that you are getting your ass kicked by, oh yes, another set of plank.
In its previous life, it was a ballet studio housed in one of the oldest buildings on Abbot Kinney. The stark white interiors and industrial details mix beautifully with The Dailey Method's signature pops of orange, green and pink branding elements that were introduced when studio owners Tenaya Cardoso and Michelle Lazarus took over and remodeled the space last year.
With the help of their family, Lazarus' father and Cardoso's brother are both contractors, and design by friend Sam Marshall, lead designer on Abbot Kinney's Gjelina, they created walls for the ballet bars and full-length mirrors, and then designed around existing architectural heart-melts like exposed brick walls and sky-high ceilings.
"We tried to use as much as we could from the previous space," says Lazarus.
They unearthed and treated the original concrete floors and added eco-friendly cork in the studio instead of carpet like most other barre studios. They believe it's better on the joints and easier to keep clean.
They found vintage pendant lights at the Rose Bowl Flea Market and dotted the exposed beams with standard white porcelain light sockets and round bulbs.
An upstairs loft was converted into a playroom. They offer childcare, Monday through Friday, during the 9:30 a.m. class.
Scrap wood from the remodel did not go to waste. It was used to create the front desk.
Hanging plant pots are from neighboring A+R, and cold-pressed, organic, protein-packed juices are specially made and brought in from The Supper Society.
The merch rack is filled with apparel from local designers including Omgirl, Beyond Yoga, and Soiyl sandals, handmade by Venice-based artist and designer Dolores Melgoza.
New students can join The Dailey Method for unlimited classes for one month for $100. Visit The Dailey Method Website for additional details.
