10 Local Spots for Delicious Holiday Pies

It may be called Turkey Day, but the real showstopper of Thanksgiving Day feast doesn't make its appearance until the grand finale. Yes, we're talking pie—pumpkin, apple crumble, chocolate pecan, and if you're feeling fancy, perhaps a chocolate s'mores pie topped with toasted marshmallow fluff. If you're not feeling up to the task of rolling out grandma's famous butter crust and you prefer to leave the pies to the pros, here are several options around the neighborhood to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth at the table.

Superba Food & Bread

About that s'mores pie. It's a newcomer from the bakery at Superba Food & Bread, and if you're a fan of the s'mores in a jar dessert from Superba Snack Bar, then this one's for you. It begins with a layer of graham cracker crust, followed by rich, slightly sweet chocolate cream filling, and finishes with a gorgeous swirl of toasted marshmallow fluff. Superba F&B also has you covered on all the fixings, from maple smashed yams and sausage stuffing to cranberry orange chutney and more pies. For a modern twist on the traditional, try the pumpkin pie made with cinderella pumpkin filling and topped with vanilla streusel or the not-too-sweet, not-too-spiced, honey crisp apple crumble. ($35 each, serves 6-8)

Sinners & Saints

This charming eat-in cafe serves up a tempting selection of some of the best treats in town, from light-as-air angel food cake to decadent chocolate brownies. And of course, there's an incredible selection of pie. Traditional pumpkin ($20) is perfectly balanced with sweetness and spice, and upped a notch with a chip of housemade pumpkin brittle. For a bit of Southern comfort, go for the chocolate pecan finished with a splash of bourbon or a peach pie with butter crust ($30 each). Choose from the "sinners" selection for the no-holds-barred recipes passed down from owner Elisa Testone's mom, or "Saints" for gluten-free, sugar-free delights, which Elisa perfected herself. Add a jar of housemade whipped cream for $8.

Gjusta

Baked, smoked, grilled or pickled, you really can't go wrong with any of the offerings at this critically acclaimed bakery-turned-all-day-eatery, and the pies are second to none. Whether you want to dish out $65 for an apple pie, or $55 for a pumpkin, pecan bourbon, or sweet potato pie is up to you—they do come in a glass dish. You could also attempt to make the exact same butter crust at home using the Gjusta/Gjelina recipe and then add your own filling. It's published in Gjelina's new cookbook, "Gjelina: Cooking From Venice California" along with the filling for blackberry, huckleberry and ginger pie, an original recipe from Gjelina's former head baker and national pie champ Nicole Rucker. (Thanksgiving pie orders must be placed by Saturday, November 21.)

Morfia's Ribs & Pies

The Dallas transplants behind Morfia's Ribs & Pies on Lincoln Blvd. put a lot of love into their authentic Texas BBQ slow-smoked meats and savory sides, and not surprisingly, they also know a thing or two about homemade pie. The signature baklava cheesecake is a layered wonder of holiday delight—buttery graham cracker crust, topped with a deep dish of creamy cheesecake, and finished with a generous skim of traditional Greek baklava. This one is a must, but there's plenty more to choose from that run the gamut from traditional sweet potato and fruit pies to lemon meringue, banana cream and chocolate pecan. ($22 to $25 per pie).

Aussie Pies

Add something savory into the mix with a meat pie. For the first time since opening last November, Aussie Pies will be offering family-size 9-inch pies ($44.95) for Thanksgiving including a turkey and sage, chicken tarragon, steak and shiraz, and more. There are lots of hearty sides to choose from too, made for stacking on top of the pies, including minty mushy peas, roasted garlic mash, croissant sausage stuffing, and of course, the gravy.

I Am Creative pumpkin pie at Cafe Gratitude.

Cafe Gratitude

Raw and vegan are two descriptors you may not associate with a gluttonous Thanksgiving Day free-for-all, but if you need a vegan option on the dessert menu, or you simply love fresh, amazingly delicious pumpkin pie, then consider this "I Am Creative" pumpkin pie ($35). Coconut milk, butternut squash, date paste, Irish moss and ginger juice are blended with aromatic vanilla and spices to make this very tasty vegan pie. The traditional graham cracker crust is hardly missed with the sweet and crunchy blend of pecans and dates used in this one. You are creative, Cafe Gratitude, and we thank you for it.

It's the perfect finish to a hearty feast, especially if you're planning on a Southern-style spread or a deep-fried bird.
