Events Roundup: Way Over Yonder // Abbot Kinney Fest // More

Way Over Yonder kicks off today at the Santa Monica Pier with a stellar mix of alt-country, indie rock, and singer-songwriter greats including Lucinda Williams, Jackson Browne and Local Natives headlining the two-day folk festival. Full lineup and link to purchase tickets here

Did you know that the movie Grease was filmed here at Venice High School? It may be the first week of fall, but we'll be singing about those summer nights at the annual Grease Sing-Along and outdoor movie screening on the Rydell ... err, Venice High School football field Saturday starting at 4 p.m. Wear your leather jackets and poodle skirts. Admission is free. There will be a taco truck, raffle prizes, and the much-appreciated donations benefit the VHS Alumni Association general fund for scholarships and other academic programs.

If you prefer music mixed with incredible art installations inside intriguing, nondescript warehouses, then go to the opening reception of WNDO, a mixed-use gallery and sound studio featuring a digital/analog mashup of work by Jim Budman, a fixture in the local art community for more than 20 years, and emerging artists Bisco Smith and Dfalt. The show explores social and philosophical systems of space, balance and tension.

In a grand weekend finale, Sunday brings the annual Abbot Kinney Festival, and visitors from every stretch of L.A., so save your parking spot and travel by foot, bike or board to check out Venice's biggest event of the year. It's one day only from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m, with 300 vendors, five live-music stages, and several new Abbot Kinney openings to explore. Whether you're there to eat, drink, shop, play with the kids, or catch up on all that's new on the popular strip from Venice Blvd. to Main Street, there's something for everyone. Plan ahead by perusing the festival map and full vendor list here.

For those who prefer to dodge the crowds, it's still L.A. Beer Week through Sunday. There are events from Long Beach to Pasadena showcasing the season's best pours often paired with delicious bites. Lucky for you, we narrowed down the ones on the Westside. Cheers!
