Salt & Straw Ice Cream Coming Soon To Venice
Another Portland import is about to debut on Abbot Kinney. In June, Blue Star Donuts announced that it would take over the former Elvino space, and now comes word that small batch ice cream shop Salt & Straw is coming next.
With a focus on locally sourced, seasonal ingredients and inventive flavors like chocolate caramel and potato chip cupcake, green fennel and maple, and lemon cucumber sorbet, Salt & Straw is looking to L.A. to sweeten its fanbase and churn out even more original flavors with the Southland's bounty of farm-fresh produce.
L.A.'s first bustling Salt & Straw scoop shop opened earlier this year in Larchmont Village. By summer's end, the Westside will get one on Abbot Kinney and California Ave., in the former Casalinda Mexican restaurant, and by the end of the year, another will land in the Arts District in Downtown L.A.
"We're planting more roots in Los Angeles," Salt & Straw said in a statement. "We’re so very excited to announce the opening of two new scoop shops in LA: Abbot Kinney in fall 2015 and Arts District in winter 2016. We've loved getting to know the Los Angeles community through our Larchmont Village shop and can't wait to get to know everyone in our new neighborhoods and share our ice cream with you."
To stave off the anticipation, Salt & Straw will start to serve scoops outside of its future DTLA home at 829 E. 3rd St. daily from noon to 10 p.m. starting this Friday, August 14.
Salt & Straw has also been establishing its L.A. cred by rolling out ice cream collaborations with chef Roy Choi (Papi's Korean Fluffernutter), Compartes gourmet chocolatier (Stumptown Coffee & Compartes Love Nuts), and Guelaguetza Oaxacan restaurant and Mezcaleria (Molé Rojo Flan). All ice cream is churned locally in the company's Boyle Heights kitchen.
