Westside Stylist Kyle Mathis On Where To Get Food, Ink and a Stiff Drink
Dallas transplant Kyle Mathis set his roots in L.A. just off Rose Avenue when he moved to Venice in 2005. The colorful beach town with its alluring dark side would serve as the backdrop for Mathis to marry his love of art and music with hairdressing. He relocated the salon a few times throughout the Venice/Santa Monica area, but the experience is consistently a handsome mashup of rich color and texture with a laid-back rock 'n' roll vibe where loyal patrons lounge as Mathis works his magic.
Mathis recently merged with his new bride Lindsey Carse, owner of Fringe of Beverly Hills, and together they opened a Fringe location on Main Street. With their worlds combined, the new salon delivers a heavy dose of Parisian flare mixed with Mathis' signature style.
When the master stylist is off the clock, here are a few places around town where you'll likely find him.
Golds Gym
"I spend most of my time there away from work. I should be twice my size. But I like to eat garbage. I've been working out there for at least eight years. I don't look at it like a social thing, more like an escape."
Gold's Gym // 360 Hampton Dr., Venice, 90291
Lula's
"I think LA has absolutely terrible Mexican food. I think I grew up on too much Tex-Mex in Dallas. That being said, Lula's has amazing food. And let's not even talk about the margaritas. I'm pretty sure they put gasoline in them. But, they're amazing. Better stop at two."
Lula Cocina Mexicana // 2720 Main St., Santa Monica, 90405
Rose Cafe
"The first two years in LA I lived off of croissants and coffee from Rose. I love the artsy vibe. The coffee is delicious (Groundworks?). I lived on Rose and 5th Street for my first year here. I'd walk down to Rose Cafe and then down to the beach."
Rose Cafe // 220 Rose Ave., Venice, 90291
Townhouse
"Local watering hole. It's got the dark seedy nightclub feel downstairs where they serve up Speakeasy-style refreshments and the top floor feels like a dive bar. Great live music from bluesy hip hop-jazz to rock. It can get a little busy, but you still can have a conversation."
Townhouse // 52 Windward Ave., Venice, 90291
Ink Monkey Tattoo
"I've gotten more than one tattoo and piercing done here. The artists aren't the typical douchebags you usually meet at a tattoo shop. Super clean and professional."
Ink Monkey Tattoo // 2417 Lincoln Blvd., Venice, 90291
