The Venice Sign will be lit in a rainbow of color on Friday, June 3 for the first Venice Pride sign lighting and block party celebration.

Festivities begin at 7 p.m. with music courtesy of DJ Victor Rodriquez and dancing at Windward Plaza. Just like the annual holiday sign lighting ceremony, a surprise celebrity guest will do the honors of flipping on the switch.

Venice Pride celebrates the LGBTQ community and will also be held in memory of Bill Rosendahl, the first openly gay man elected to the Los Angeles City Council, who passed away in March. 

“I am excited and elated to be a part of the first Venice LGBT Pride celebration,” Councilmember Mike Bonin said to The Pride. "For more than 100 years, Venice has been known as a place of diversity and tolerance. For decades, it was a home and a safe haven for the gay community, and having a special pride celebration in Venice is long overdue. I am particularly grateful to Grant Turck and Daniel Samakow (Danny's Venice) for conceiving the event, and to George Francisco (Venice Chamber of Commerce) and so many others who are working with them to make it happen."

According to the report, Bonin is expected to announce that the beach from Brooks Ave. to Windward Ave. in Venice will be named The Bill Rosendahl Beach in his honor.

Following the event, Danny’s Venice will host an after party, and on Saturday and Sunday there's an LGBTQ Beach party starting at 11 a.m. at the rainbow colored Breakwater Lifeguard Tower No. 20 on Venice Beach.

Venice Pride will benefit The Trevor Project, a national organization that helps LGBTQ teens and young adults in crisis. 

Over the past few years, the Venice Chamber of Commerce has added a variety of colored bulbs into its collection to commence various occasions. Most recently, the iconic banner was lit in green for St. Paddy's Day. Next month it'll go red, white and blue for the Fourth of July. Francisco has been leading the charge in adding more sign lighting ceremonies that celebrate the diversity of Venice in addition to the big holidays.
