Gunpowder Tea Spot Brews 24/7 Fruit-Infused Ammo

At Gunpowder, tea is the new black ... coffee, that is.

Moved into the old Dagwoods space at 202 Main Street, Gunpowder bills itself as a 24-hour tea lab/workspace/hangout. A banner out front reads, "Opens 3/3/14. Closes never." And with the powerful caffeinated punch their signature Gunshot teaspresso latte packs, it shouldn't be too hard to stay up into the wee hours in this new boutique tea joint.

The interior is divided into work and play spaces. A long, English Elm wood table along one side is outfitted with Aeron chairs and USB outlets, so you can stay connected and productive as you sip your Oolong with White Peach and Basil infused tea. In another corner, two adirondack chairs sit atop a plot of real live grass for some indoor-backyard kickin’ back. The space also offers skateboarding parking, a huge gold-framed ultra-hi-def video screen, loads of iPads incorporated into the product display and ordering system, and some kind of magical bathroom door touch-entry key. Nice tech touches that the Silicon Beach crowd will surely appreciate.

Brazenly positioned directly across the street from Starbucks, Gunpowder wants to show you something you can’t get at any typical coffee shop. (And we should note, Starbucks knows that tea is what their customers might be drinking next, as they acquired the tea retailer Teavana for $620 million in 2012.)

Gunpowder’s iced teas are cold brewed and infused with herbs and fresh fruit, which you can see on the shelves behind the counter. The freshness of the ingredients and the infusion process mean you benefit from way more antioxidants and much less sugar. It’s actually one of the reasons it makes sense for the business to be 24 hours – someone is onsite brewing and infusing the teas overnight so there is always fresh yummy stuff for us Venitians to sip on.

If you really want to get amped and are looking for that Starbucks coffee replacement, go for the Java Black or Gunshot tea drinks. The base of both Java Black and Gunshot tea is guayasa, which you can think of as yerba mate’s smoother cousin. The signature drink, Gunshot, is a teaspresso that can be prepared as a shot or a latte, iced or blended. We sampled a Gunshot latte with almond milk when we visited and were happily buzzing for the rest of our day. Alongside their menu of beverages, Gunpowder will also offer gluten-free sweet snacks and tea-based gelato. Mmm.

Gunpowder opens for business on Monday, March 3. And closes never.
