Return to Rose Ave, El Jefe!

Return to Rose Ave, El Jefe!

Rose Ave's Big Red Sun sets the scene for the food truck turned restaurant El Jefe in the movie Chef.

Remember this scene from the movie Chef? After slinging cubanos from his El Jefe food truck, chef Carl Casper (Jon Favreau) won the hearts of foodies from Miami Beach to Austin all the way back home to Venice where he finally opened his own restaurant. He picked the perfect location too, right here on Rose Ave.

Tonight the El Jefe food truck returns in real life at Animal in West Hollywood. Favreau along with chef Roy Choi, who served as inspiration and consultant in Chef, will be on hand serving up the famous Cuban sandwiches starting at 6 p.m.

Sorry for the tease, but it gets even better. Borrowing again from the script, El Jefe is highlighting some of the best barbecue in the world. Favreau and Choi have paired up with barbecue pitmaster Adam Perry Lang and Austin's Aaron Franklin of Franklin Barbecue to join them at the pop-up. Reservations for the BBQ pop-up are sold out. (Apologies again for the tease.) But El Jefe is ready to roll. Chef Choi tweeted today that El Jefe sold out last night by 8 p.m. so he's making 100 extra sandwiches. The quick two-night pop-up ends as soon as those run out.

Now, we do realize that this pop-up in WeHo is a decent trek from El Jefe's on-screen home on Rose Ave., but as we continue to be major fans of chef Choi and his many, many creative endeavors, we'll gladly go the distance, and if you happen to be in the area, don't miss out. Hopefully El Jefe will one day pay us a visit on Casper's home turf too.
