Sweet Rose Creamery Pop-Up On Abbot Kinney

Try Japanese-inspired ice cream flavors this Sunday at Sweet Rose Creamery's monthly pop-up at Tortoise General Store on Abbot Kinney.

This Sunday, and every last Sunday of the month until September 27, from 1 to 5 p.m., enjoy unique flavors including edamame, miso caramel and shisho sherbet. Scoops are served in a white sesame or matcha cone, and house-made almond milk, coffee drinks and blueberry soda will also be available.

A special treat for ice cream enthusiasts, Sweet Rose Creamery is known for its fresh, clean ingredients and unique, seasonal flavors crafted by Shiho Yoshikawa, a Japanese native who moved to the U.S. at 15 to study art and eventually focused her creative expression into culinary school, pastries, custards and then ice cream. She personally selects fruit and produce from the Santa Monica Farmer's Market every week, and all her ice cream, sorbets, and dairy free ice creams are made in-house from scratch each day.

With three locations now in L.A., Sweet Rose Creamery is part of Josh Loeb and wife Zoe Nathan's growing roster of top Westside dining destinations that includes Rustic Canyon, Milo & Olive, Huckleberry, and Santa Monica's just-opened Cassia with Bryant and Kim Ng (Spice Table) at the helm.

The not-so-secret to their success is partnering with great talents for each project like Yoshikawa, a friend of Nathan's from their days baking together at San Francisco's Tartine, who helped open Huckleberry. After the Santa Monica bakery debuted to great acclaim, Yoshikawa planned to move to Hawaii with her husband to open an ice cream shop, but Loeb and Nathan convinced her to stay in L.A. with another sweet opportunity.

Tortoise General Store provides the ideal backdrop for a Sweet Rose Creamery pop-up. The Abbot Kinney boutique features a variety of premium and handcrafted goods by Japanese artists, or artists using traditional Japanese techniques, including fine tableware and colorful block-printed linens. Since you're there, you might skip the sesame cone and pick out a new bowl to take home with a scoop of edamame ice cream in it.
